Myths About Ringing Ears

Ringing ears is something which many of us may have experienced at least once in our lives. The condition is a common one which experts estimate affects about fifty million people in the United States alone. With something as widespread as this, it is no wonder there are many myths about ringing ears.

Before we get started on some myths and the truths behind ringing ears it is important to keep in mind some things. The medical term used to describe this condition is called tinnitus. It is the perception of sound coming from one or both ears or inside the head without a corresponding external source. While it has often been described as ringing ears, it has also been said to sound like a whistling, buzzing, roaring, chirping and crackling which can range in intensity from subtle to piercing.

Myth no.1 Tinnitus is just a sign that your ears are healing themselves

How many times have we heard this, especially after our ears ring after listening to our iPods for too long at very loud volumes or after attending a concert with loud music? The truth is that the ringing in your ears may already be a sign of hearing loss.

Myth no. 2 Tinnitus is a sickness or disease

Tinnitus is not considered to be a disease in itself. Rather it is seen and treated as a symptom of some other underlying medical condition and can also be triggered by severe emotional or psychological states. And while the exact cause of ringing in the ears is not yet fully understood by medical experts, the medical problems which can trigger it are well documented. Among them include allergies or problems with the sinuses, head injury, ear wax impaction, hearing loss, diabetes, hypertension, Meniere’s disease and cardiovascular problems. Stress and anxiety have also been known to trigger tinnitus.

Myth no. 3 There is no cure for tinnitus

A person who says there is no cure for tinnitus is not being accurate. A more accurate statement would be that there is as yet no definitive cure for tinnitus. This simply means that there is no one way to cure or treat all kinds of tinnitus. There are several ways one can treat ringing ears and it is just a matter of finding the right ears ringing treatment which will work for you.

Should you find yourself to be experiencing ringing ears, immediately consult with and have yourself examined by a qualified medical specialist. He or she is the person in the best position to help you treat your tinnitus and recommend measures for relief from ringing ears.
