Perceiving tinnitus noise is a common condition. Experts estimate that about fifty million people in America experience this symptom in one degree or another. About two million new cases of ringing ears are diagnosed every year.
Tinnitus is the medical term used to describe the symptom where one perceives a sound coming from one or both ears or inside the head. Tinnitus noise can only be heard by the person with the symptom and has been described to sound like a ringing, buzzing, roaring, chirping, whistling, crackling or clicking and can either be a subtle noise in the background or piercing in intensity.
If left untreated, tinnitus noise can get in the way of being able to communicate with and hear others. It can also present difficulties when trying to sleep or concentrate on mentally challenging tasks. A person with particularly intense symptoms can feel increasingly isolated and frustrated and can later fall into despair and depression.
If you want to stop tinnitus noise, here are three things you should do.
Visit a doctor
Tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease by itself. It can signal the presence of any one of several health problems or be the adverse effect of intense emotional states. Your doctor is the best person to help you identify and treat the medical problem which triggered your tinnitus and will be able to recommend ear ringing remedies and additional measures for relief from tinnitus noise should you need it.
Avoid unhealthy substances
Tinnitus can also be triggered by the intake of certain substances. Among the most common tinnitus-triggering substances are alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. Aspirin when taken in large dosages can also trigger tinnitus as well as medication which may have harmful side effects on the ear and hearing. Allergies can be a possible culprit too. In these cases, avoiding these substances may be all that is necessary to stop ringing of the ears. Keep in mind to never stop taking prescribed medication without your doctor’s go-ahead. Ask him or her for an alternative if you suspect it is your medication which is causing your tinnitus.
Change your diet
Adopting a healthy lifestyle and eating the right food can do wonders to hasten your recovery from and reduce the intensity of tinnitus. As a general rule, foods which can aggravate an existing medical condition you may have will make tinnitus worse too. Instead choose foods rich in Vitamins A, C, D, E and zinc---all of which have been shown to have beneficial effects on tinnitus.
