Ringing of the ears is a common experience. Everyone must have experienced it once in their lives such as when one has listened to one’s iPod at full blast for too long, after attending a loud concert, or after standing too close to exploding fireworks. These encounters with ringing ears however, are often brief and once the ear ringing noises stop, the incident is dismissed and forgotten.
For an estimated fifty million people in the United States however, the ringing does not stop. For twelve million of these people the symptoms are intense enough as to require medical attention for it. For another two million people the symptom is so bad that it debilitates them and leaves them incapable of engaging in normal human interaction or everyday tasks.
